Magnitude 4.1 earthquake hits northern California, triggering shake alert

 A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck Sacramento County Wednesday morning, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake, which occurred at 9:29 a.m., occurred near Iselton, according to the agency's website.

"It felt like an 18-wheeler had hit the building," DeBerry Stockon, manager of Owl Harbor Marina in Isleton, said Wednesday morning.

Stockton said the quake shook the marina office for about a minute, but there appeared to be no permanent damage to the building, which is built on stilts near the entrance to the San Joaquin River. The epicenter of the quake was less than a mile south of Brannan Island, in the labyrinth of waterways that runs through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Californians reported feeling mild shaking as far south as Stockton and as far north as Sacramento, according to intensity maps obtained by the USGS.

"I was on the phone with one of my customers, and it was a metal building, so it was shaking so much it was scary," said Cindy Golihar, an employee at the vast Viera Resort, located between Ayrton and Rio Vista. Ta.

Golihar said some items fell from shelves and walls, but there was no major damage to the building. She said she received the vibration signal "probably three minutes after it happened."

Initial warnings indicated a stronger quake, but a quick analysis by the USGS lowered the quake's magnitude to 4.1.

By Wednesday evening, the USGS "Did you feel it?" community map had nearly 3,000 reports of the earthquake being felt across the Sacramento and Bay Area regions, with the shaking's strength being moderate in Iselton. Most people except for rated it as being sensitive to light. To be strong.

Some BART trains in the Bay Area were temporarily suspended due to the earthquake, but service quickly resumed.

The quake may have been felt in parts of the Bay Area, including San Ramon and downtown Brentwood.
